wesli's room

well, it's taken over two years, but i am finally done with wesli's room. i was going for an ultra feminine vintage vibe.

wesli's great, great grandmother made this green afghan. i can crochet, but there is a reason i make hats. that is a HUGE project. i cant even imagine how many hours were put into it. i think she would be pleased to know that it's still getting use all these years later. mary udy- your struggles were not in vain!

i spent money on the bedding and rug. like i got them from a real, actual store, not at the D.I. or my dads shop. big thanks to darin for letting me buy my dream bedding, even though we are poor. darin always lets me get what i want if i beg him long enough. he must really love me or something.

i kind of hate the silhouette. it's so thick, that it doesn't lay flat against the background. perhaps i shouldn't have used a cafe rio lid, but apparently they don't make metallic scrap book paper.
the cross stitch says 'i will bring the light of the gospel into my home' it is quite possibly my favorite thing about the room. this is why:
wlp? wanda lyn palmer. my mommy. i think she was 11.

above the crib:
that flowery thing is all yarn. i know it's ghetto.
the dresser. truthfully i kind of cringe when i look at it. scrap book paper on the dresser drawers of a two year old = not my best idea. as you can see she couldn't wait to get her cute, chubby, little fingers on it. ripped it to shreds. i still love her.
the curtains were the last thing i needed for the room because i'm intimidated by the sewing machine. but i finally conquered my fears. please don't look too close. i can't sew a straight line to save my life.
i scoured the universe for antique books with classic children's titles in colors to match wesli's room. then i decided i was being ridiculous and i should just get old books that were the right colors. that's how i explain the 'preface to critical reading' sitting on my toddlers dresser.
i know this is not every ones taste. i fully expect most people to look at this and think it's nothing more than a collection of junk. but i like it.

hard.

learning a new skill is never fun for me, but i reeeeeally wanna be able to cross-stitch. i thought it would be super simple and self explanatory. guess what, it's soooooo not!!!
i'm almost done with my first project. i'm not sure if i'm going to display it anywhere. i'm closer to burning it, it has so many flaws. but i guess that's all part of the process.

these french knots are sooooo frustrating. i have a bloody stump of a finger from stabbing myself with a needle so many times.

originally i was going to fill all the birdies in with a different color, but after doing one, i changed my mind.
so far the hardest part of this is finding cute patterns. i refuse to buy new stuff because i'm cheap, and most of my moms old stuff is all teddy bears. teddy bears reading, teddy bears with balloons, teddy bears with the ABC's. teddy bears, teddy bears, teddy bears. i don't understand how that was ever cute. i'm sure that will be what wesli says about the flowers and birds one day.

one step at a time

i've decided that i have the rest of my life to decorate with earth tones and red accents, so i'm taking advantage of our apartment dwelling years to make some wild and drastic changes. so far:

isn't this couch sweet? i'm guessing it's from the 60's.
this dresser was a freebie. abandoned at one of my dad's apartments. he gave me specific instructions to take it to the D.I.
instead i took it to his shop to take up lots of room where he was trying to work on his own project, and used his paint, and closet door handles, and screws, and took his employee from him to help me move it into my apartment. i also left his shop floor yellow. about 50 coats of spray pait later, and bam! darin stared at it forever and then said "if you like it, then i like it". i don't even know what to say about how cool my husband is, except that he's really cool.

more to come of this apartment makeover later. for now, just enjoy these two wierd things.

busy elswhere

when i started this denim quilt (a year ago) i didn't know how to thread the sewing machine. now i can do it all by myself!

most of these jeans were from the seventies with the exception of a few from the 80's.
check out the pleats in those acid wash pants. pretty disgusting, huh?

a lot of the jeans were my dads old work pants. they needed lots of patches. i like to imagine my dad as a younger man at the construction site, with his tool belt around his waist, having his jeans patched with a really girly stitch and pink flannel with polka dots underneath.
this is the flannel i used on the back. anyone know of a cuter way to tie a quilt than with yarn. i feel like yarn ruins it somehow.

this was the first hat i ever crocheted. i guess i got sick of looking at it, because now it looks like this:

an unlikely color combo

a baby gap rip off

i made this one in honor of jack kelly.
